Norfolk Seniors

2018 Southern Counties Foursomes Final

Norfolk Seniors travelled to Ealing GC to play in the Southern Foursomes Final having beaten Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire to qualify. The 36 hole scratch foursomes matchplay completion has an unusual format, but ultimately the team with the most wins on the day emerge victorious.
At the final Norfolk played Sussex, Hertfordshire and Devon who had qualified having beaten the Counties in their zone. It was clear soon after arrival that Norfolk would need to perform much better than their handicaps suggested, if they were to challenge Teams that were loaded with stronger players.
In the morning Norfolk started strong and at one point were up in 4 of the 5 matches, but by lunchtime the picture had changed with Norfolk securing a win through Mark Skipper and Adrian Myhill and a half through Rob Webb and Alistair Pykett, but losing the other three matches. After lunch the Norfolk players again played solid golf but were unable to add to the 1.5 points secured in the morning.
The final scoring saw Sussex emerge winners and Norfolk in 4th place. This was only the second time Norfolk have reached this final and the real achievement was in getting there.

L to R:
Rob Webb, Neal Milton, Alistair Pykett, Tony Richards, Tony Ralton, Mark Skipper,
Graham Turner (County President), David Pattrick, John Tavener, Adrian Myhill and Michael Horley.

Norfolk Seniors

Friendly match against Leicestershire & Rutland

Norfolk Seniors travelled to Rutland County Golf Club to play Leicestershire in a friendly match. The morning Greensomes saw Leicestershire romp into a 5 — 1 lead, winning 4 of the 6 matches. The other 2 saw Norfolk’s Michael Horley and Peter Howard together with Mark Allen and Dave Hudson obtain halves.
The afternoon better ball games saw Norfolk obtain their only win of the day with Simon Tilbrook and Bernie Vaughan winning 3 & 2, Michael Horley and Peter Howard halved again but Leicestershire won the other 4 matches to win 9.5 — 2.5 on the day.

Norfolk Seniors

Seniors league match versus Lincolnshire

In the last league match of the season Norfolk Seniors entertained Lincolnshire at King's Lynn Golf Club. The day began with bright sunshine, not a cloud in the sky, and full of promise that Norfolk might win the final match of what has been a generally less than successful 2018 battle in the league. But as the clouds rolled in, the putts didn't (at least, not for Norfolk) and Lincs scored a convincing 5-0 whitewash in the morning foursomes. The afternoon singles, played in sporadic light rain, seemed to be following the same pattern as the foursomes with the first three games all going to Lincs. However, the Sheringham duo of Neal Milton and Tony Ralton both won their singles matches and the King's Lynn home players of Harvey Scott, Peter Howard and Mark Allen also contributed with two wins and a halved match respectively. The final result being 10-1/2 points to Lincolnshire and 4-1/2 points to Norfolk. Norfolk team: Pattrick, Pykett, Webb, Milton, Ralton, Richards, Hogg, Scott, Howard, Allen.

2018 Norfolk Seniors' Champioships

Norfolk Seniors' Championships

This year’s seniors’ championships were held at Bawburgh Club. The weather leading up to the event was not too encouraging with rain throughout the County for the whole day but this did little to daunt the aspirations of the competitors.
62 players signed in to make an assault on the title including last year’s champion Will Howett of Royal Cromer. As the scores came in it was clear the course offered a real test of golf and a credit to the club and course the course management team.

Some great golf was on display with steady scores being posted. Gary Harvey of Royal Norwich was an early starter and having returned a fantastic gross 78, nett 76 he had a long and nervous wait until the final players came in. Gary was absolutely delighted when in the end no one could better his score and he was crowned Norfolk County Seniors’ Champion. Gary now goes forward to Woodhall Spa to represent Norfolk in the England Golf County Champion of Champions Tournament in September. Paul Pritty of Eaton came in second, on countback, with a gross 79. On the same score was Michael Horley of Thetford finishing 3rd and Ian Macrae of Barnham Broom and home player Mike Payne of Bawburgh also with a gross 79 finishing 4th and 5th respectively.

The Handicap Championship was taken by Ian Macrae of Barnham Broom with a nett 71 just easing out Paul Pritty of Eaton with a nett 72.

The Super Seniors’ Championship run in conjunction with the main event with Trophies being donated by past Presidents Doug Gilchrist (Scratch) and Alan Winstanley (Handicap) resulted with Paul Pritty of Eaton winning the Championship with a gross 79 and Ian Macrae of Barnham Broom securing the Handicap Division with a nett 71.

The Scratch Team Championships for the Peter Clarke Shield Trophy was won by Bawburgh with the team of Robert Webb, Richard Bunn and Mike Payne with a combined score of 245.

The Handicap Team Championships for the Frank Boswall Trophy went to the Royal Cromer team of Phil Hacking, David Pattrick and Anthony Gurney Read with a combined score of 224 nett.

SEG - Southern Counties Foursomes

Sheringham GC had the honour of hosting the England Golf, South East Group, Southern Counties Senior Foursomes. Four Counties, Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire, vied for the chance to go forward to a national final. The course, in magnificent condition, delivered a suitable challenge for the players with Norfolk finally coming out on top and taking the much valued slot into the national final.

Pairings of Pattrick & Tavener, Milton & Ralton, Laird and Webb, Myhill & Brayshaw and Hogg & Horley all produced the goods on the day. The Norfolk contingent, after the morning round, took a modest lead into lunch with the prospects of securing the necessary points in the afternoon to take the day. Some sterling efforts in the afternoon added to the points tally of the morning and finally with the last putt of the last match, Norfolk had done it…..
