Ice-cool Scholes stands tall in Norfolk trophy triumph

Norfolk Boys’ golf team and Norfolk County Golf
Union president Robert Barnard celebrate success in the 2022 BUT Trophy.

NORFOLK Boys’ golf team claimed the BUT Trophy for the first time since 2010 with a thrilling victory at Glen Course Golf Club in Leicestershire. The Under-18s inter-county event against Bedfordshire and Leicestershire/Rutland went right down to the wire as 10 singles ties followed five morning foursomes contests.

But it was Norfolk who emerged victorious, thanks to Luke Scholes’ ice-cool finish in the very final match.

The Bawburgh Golf Club member held a one-up lead over both of his opponents standing on the 18th tee from where he launched another imperious drive.

But Scholes was a shade unfortunate with his subsequent approach as it hit the edge of the green before landing precariously under a bunker lip.

By this point all of the Norfolk contingent were gathered around the greenside – albeit not fully aware of the exact details of the overall match situation.

Scholes remained fully focused on the job at hand, splashing out from the trap to leave a ten-footer for par that he duly stroked home to clinch two points for his team.

A nervous wait followed as all the scores were totted up to confirm that Norfolk and Leicestershire/Rutland had finished on 15.5 points with Bedfordshire back in third on 14.

But it was Norfolk who were declared victors on the strength of a superior 8-7 points tally in the head-to-head with Leicestershire/Rutland.

Scholes was very much of the hero of the hour, making a stunning Norfolk junior debut. Indeed, in the foursomes he partnered Felix Bartram as they overcame both opposition pairings to bag maximum points.

The morning’s play also saw Ed Featherstone and James Tippling pick up a point against Bedfordshire, whilst Daniel Leggett and Harry Thomas beat a Leicestershire/Rutland duo. Alex Blake and Sullivan Goddard played a part too with an important half-point against Bedfordshire.

Norfolk’s overall game management on the tree-lined Leicestershire course improved in the singles with Ed Featherstone and James Tipling leading the afternoon charge. They both played some stunning golf to record convincing wins – a feat emulated by Daniel Leggett and Bartram.

In what was a real team performance Jamison Gray and Alfie Edgson contributed with valuable half-points before Scholes stood tall in the finale to secure the spoils for Norfolk.

“The boys showed magnificent spirit and skill to win the trophy,” said Norfolk County Golf Union president Robert Barnard. “The fact that there were three players of 14 years old or younger and that every team member made a points contribution bodes well for the rest of this season and beyond.”

NORFOLK: Ed Featherstone (Sheringham), James Tipling (Sheringham), Alfie Edgson (Heacham Manor), Jamison Gray (Great Yarmouth & Caister), Sullivan Goddard (Bawburgh), Luke Scholes (Bawburgh), Alex Blake (Royal Norwich), Daniel Leggett (Royal Norwich), Felix Bartram (Eaton) and Harry Thomas (Eaton).

Under 18 Manager Sammy Martin announces her team

The But Trophy is a triangular match between Norfolk, Leicestershire and Bedfordshire. The format is foursomes in the morning followed by afternoon singles.

The host golf club this year is Glen Gorse which is a parkland venue, so the team will need to focus on intelligent course management, alignment and efficient short game skills. However, it must not be forgotten that camaraderie and team spirit is also vital for peak performance.

It is important to build on the victory in the traditional warm up match against the Eaton Men's Myhill and Cullington Teams and Norfolk are very proud to select such a talented group of players.

The team is as follows:

Ed Featherstone
Daniel Leggett
James Tipling
Harry Thomas
Jamison Gray
Felix Bartram
Luke Scholes
Charlie Woodward
Sullivan Goddard
Alfie Edgson
