Royal Norwich victorious in Cullington Cup

Date

Royal Norwich Golf Club won their second county team knockout of the season when they defeated the team from Great Yarmouth and Caister in the final of the Cullington Cup.

Having already won the Seniors Barnard Trophy a few weeks ago, the team led by captain Harry Leggoe won by 9 holes in an entertaining final hosted by Sprowston Manor.

In a 36-hole match, and in front of good support for both teams, an early advantage was pivotal and Royal Norwich took control leading by 10 holes halfway through the morning session. Great Yarmouth rallied on the back nine, with Nigel Drewery and Gareth Davies coming back from 3 down to finish all square, but scores of 4 up, 1 up, and 3 up in the other matches meant that Royal Norwich had a commanding lead of 8 holes by the lunchtime break.

The afternoon was a much closer affair and there were many positives for Great Yarmouth, who were competing in the final for the first time in the Cup’s 30 year history. Drewery and Davies continued their good form to win 5 up and the third and fourth matches were looking tight. But it was the Royal Norwich pair of Ben Grainger and Stephen Deacon who helped to secure victory with an impressive afternoon performance winning 7 up.

Royal Norwich, winning the Cup for only the second time, won by 9 holes overall, and Leggoe was presented with the trophy by County Secretary Peter Johns.
