Three and easy for Sheringham seniors

Sheringham Golf Club sealed a three-peat in the Norfolk Seniors Scratch Knockout – thanks to an emphatic victory over Caister and Great Yarmouth.

The defending champions won all five matches in a one-sided final staged at Royal Norwich Golf Club.

The closest of the ties was the sole foursomes encounter in which Sheringham pair Jon Batten and Neil Milton trailed at the turn.

But they fought back and on the final green eventually claimed a 1-up success against Paul Whiting and Chris Fielding.

In the singles, Dean Futter and Mark Williamson turned on the style as they both recorded 6 and 4 victories.

Steve Dunsire enjoyed a hard-fought battle with Josh Brooks before closing out a 3 and 2 win.

In the last match on the course, John Little ensured a Sheringham clean sweep as he beat Blair Ainslie 3 and 1.

Their title triumph followed victories in previous rounds over Royal Norwich, Hunstanton and King’s Lynn.

Sheringham’s non-playing captain Gary Brayshaw said: “We’ve played every match away from home this year, so it’s been a tough season. But we’re a strong side and getting stronger.

“I cannot overstate how proud I am of everyone. This hasn’t happened by chance. It’s down to the quality of our players, competition for places, preparation, commitment and – most importantly – the belief that we can win for each other.”
