Norfolk surge to derby success

Chris White saluted his Norfolk side after they powered to a convincing victory over Suffolk in their Anglian League encounter at Great Yarmouth and Caister Golf Club.

Norfolk’s golfers had suffered narrow reverses in the opening two fixtures of their season, but bounced back with a strong showing to record an 8-4 triumph.

The stars of the show were Tom Beasley and Tom Rutherford, who both claimed two points on their respective first league starts of the season. Carl Green also bagged maximum points to continue his fine form.

Norfolk captain White said: “Having been on the wrong side of a couple of close games to start the season it was nice to get our first win against our nearest rivals.

“Team manager, Robert Barnard and I had to contend with a full blown availability crisis in the run-up to the game, but the players did the county proud today.

“It was very pleasing to see maximum points returned by Tom Beasley, Carl Green and Tom Rutherford. It made all the difference.”

The morning foursomes were keenly contested and eventually ended up honours even at 2-2.

But the hosts came out fully firing for the afternoon singles session and soon started to pile up the points.

In the top match Beasley recorded a fine win over Reuben Harvey, who was recently crowned Suffolk Amateur champion.

Next up, Scott Wright enjoyed a birdie blitz in his convincing win over Ben Sayers.

Wily campaigners Simon Clark and Russell Oakey fought out a tight tussle that eventually went the way of the former Norfolk skipper.

His successor White posted a more clear-cut triumph as the hosts surged towards the line.

And Green and Rutherford kept the points coming as Norfolk savoured a day to remember on the historic east-coast links.
