KARL DIGGENS and TONY DEATH scored a magnificent 42 points to claim the Coronation Salvers at a windy Dereham Golf Club.
The Sprowston Manor pairing played in the very last group of the annual handicap foursomes competition and denied Dereham members Jack Hood and Jordan Mustard a home club victory.
It mirrored the events of 12 months earlier when fellow Sprowston Manor duo David Fullegar and Lewis Woods clinched the same title, having played in the last group on the course.
Diggens and Death, whose handicap indexes are 5.8 and 14.9 respectively, were playing off a combined handicap of 11 and produced a solid front nine.
The pair turned for home with 19 points, setting themselves up to attack the inward half. Diggens and Death duly mastered the tough conditions, making a fine birdie at the 13th and limiting mistakes.
They posted 23 points for their closing nine holes to seal a three-point triumph.
Diggens, the 2024 Norfolk County Handicap champion, said: “The turning point came on the 13th hole when Tony hit his 220-yards approach to just 6-feet and we made birdie. The cross-wind was difficult all day but we played steady golf. We’re over the moon and pleased to bring the Salvers title back to Sprowston for another year.”
In all, 34 pairs took on a Dereham course in excellent condition, as the golf club hosted the Salvers for only the third time in the event’s 73 year history.
Club captain Paul Attoe thanked Norfolk County Golf Union for bringing the Coronation Salvers to Dereham and, along with NCGU president Mike Devlin, presented the prizes.
