Eaton bag back-to-back Myhill Trophy triumphs

Eaton Golf Club held off a spirited fightback by Royal Norwich to retain the Myhill Cup in thrilling style.

The defending champions kept the silverware after a superb day’s foursomes golf from which they emerged successful by a 5-3 margin at King’s Lynn Golf Club.

Michael Skipper proved the hero of the hour as he and Eaton partner Rudi Hare combined well in the final match on the course.

With Eaton requiring a half-point to close out overall victory, the pair were 1-down deep into the back-nine before pulling it back to all-square with a par at the short 16th hole.

At the next, Adam Sims appeared to have given Royal Norwich the upper hand again when he drew a brilliant approach around trees to within 10 feet of the flag.

But from the front of the green Skipper produced his own moment of magic, finding the bottom of the cup with a 25-foot putt.

When Darren Critchlow’s attempt to half the hole stayed above ground, Eaton’s second successive Myhill Trophy triumph was in the bag.

As the club’s players and supporters began to celebrate, Skipper seemed the calmest man on the course – as he had at the conclusion of the morning play when he delivered another timely blow.

From a difficult spot by the side of the 18th green, he came up with a near-perfect chip to within inches of the hole. That led to a 1-up win, which gave Eaton a 3-1 lunchtime advantage.

Royal Norwich came out all guns firing in the afternoon session with their rising stars leading the way.

Youngsters Jake Gunby and Luke Gilding played some stunning stuff in securing an emphatic victory.

Fellow teenagers Luke Johnson and Tom Mathers further fuelled Royal Norwich hopes by turning around their match to win 2 and 1.

But by that stage Nic Sperrin and Neil Harrison had put a point on the board for Eaton and it was left to Skipper to seal success in grand fashion.
