Sheringham storm to Scratch success

Date

Sheringham’s side are all smiles as they receive the Scratch Knockout Trophy from Norfolk County Golf Union president Stuart Goodman.

Sheringham Golf Club secured a first Scratch Knockout triumph since 1998 with an emphatic win over King’s Lynn.

The Sheringham side swept the board in the morning foursomes and carried on in dominant fashion through the singles, powering to an overall 7.5-1.5 win at Eaton Golf Club.

Victory ensured a fine double for the north-east Norfolk club after landing the Seniors Scratch Knockout silverware in early September.

Paul Hendrick and Steve Dunsire put Sheringham’s first point on the board in the opening foursomes tie.

Fellow Norfolk Seniors golfer Jon Batten teamed up with talented teenager Liam Caffyn to record a further gain before Luke Caswell and Theo Pudney made it 3-0 at lunchtime.

King’s Lynn steeled themselves and began the head-to-heads in determined style.

Paul Holland posted their first point, but it proved to be the team’s solitary victory as Sheringham reasserted.

Hendrick and Dunsire battled to respective wins and Batten claimed a half-point from a hard-fought match with Stuart Olley.

Caffyn and Caswell added gloss to Sheringham’s dominant display as both surged to large-margin triumphs.

Sheringham skipper Batten said: “It was a fantastic team performance. To be 3-0 up after the foursomes, was really good but we were taking absolutely nothing for granted.

“Early on (in the singles), through probably six or seven holes, it was looking like it was going to be mightily close. But slowly and surely, we pegged it back – great result.”

Sheringham earned the title by beating Sprowston Manor, Royal Norwich, Barnham Broom and King’s Lynn.

Batten added: “It’s a fantastic achievement by the golf club to have won the Senior Scratch and the men’s Scratch in the same year.”
