Back-nine birdie blitz bags Norfolk title for Daniel
DANIEL LEGGETT combined a hot putter with inner steel to clinch the the County Boys’ Championship title at Wensum Valley Hotel, Golf and Country Club.
The Royal Norwich golfer suffered a couple of early bogies and completed the outward half of the Valley course in two-over-par.
But Leggett, 18, really found his touch on the greens through the back nine to surge towards success
A four-birdie burst lifted him to the head of the leaderboard with a one-under-par total of 71 – good enough for a two-stroke victory from Jamison Gray, who also played some fine golf.
It was the last time Leggett was eligible to play in the tournament and he was thrilled to pick up the winner’s silverware.
Leggett said: “It means a lot – going out on a good note. I played in it last year and I didn’t play how I wanted to, so it’s good to get revenge.
“I did all my grafting on the back nine to get to one-under. I hit some nice wedge shots from 80, 90 yards – the putter did hold me together though when those weren’t dialled.
“I holed some decent 10,15-footers for birdie, which helped me on the back nine. And there were a few clutch par putts on the front nine, early on.”
The full field was more than 30-strong and Norfolk County Golf Union development officer Sammy Martin was delighted with the potential on show.
Martin said: “There was a lot of great golf played by the boys and Daniel Leggett was a very deserving winner. Special thanks to Wensum Valley, who were excellent hosts.”
