Thetford golfer Sully Goddard capped his fine summer of golf by finishing tied for second spot at the Boys’ Champion of Champions event at Woodhall Spa.
Goddard, 16, earned his place at England Golf’s late-season showpiece by winning the Norfolk Boys’ Championship.
And the county first-team ace produced another high-quality performance that left him a single stroke off the summit.
In the opening round Goddard shot a one-under-par 72 on the esteemed Lincolnshire venue’s Hotchkin course.
He signed off with a birdie four at the final hole to trail by a shot at the halfway point before moving level on terms with an early gain in round two.
Goddard soon found himself in a spot of trouble after his approach to the fourth green almost ended up in a bush.
But he pulled off a superb pitch to a pin located just behind a bunker, escaping with a bogey to keep his victory bid on course.
Birdies at eight and nine moved him to three-under-par and he found himself with a slender lead entering the back nine.
However, the Culford School sixth-former stuttered at the tough par-4 13th and also the 16th – only to show his mettle at the penultimate hole where he made one last birdie.
Fireworks at the last could have forced a play-off but a closing par meant he fired 73 to finish at one-under for the tournament, a solitary shot behind eventual winner, Sussex’s Leo Cahi.
Goddard said: “What stood out for me was my short game. I wasn’t quite as solid off the tee, but even when I found trouble I managed to recover well with my second shots.
“I was happy with a second-place finish. The conditions were all over the place – sun, wind, rain, so it definitely kept me on my toes throughout the day.
“I love playing at Woodhall Spa. It’s such a true test of skill and I always leave feeling a real sense of accomplishment.
“It was a great way to round off a solid summer of golf. Not every competition went my way, but I took lessons from early setbacks, worked on what needed improving and came back stronger.
“I really feel like this has been the season where my game has grown the most.”
