Norfolk Seniors tested at Chelmsford

Date

Norfolk's Iain Reid had two birdies in an excellent round of 71 at the SEG Seniors Qualifier at Chelmsford GC.

Norfolk Seniors acquitted themselves respectably in a high-quality field at the South East Group six-man team qualifier at Chelmsford Golf Club this week.

Competing against ten other counties, everyone found the first day difficult on the tough, undulating par-68 Essex course. Day two, however, brought better weather conditions and the Norfolk team found some form.

Iain Reid put together a strong performance, including two birdies in his round of 71. It was one of the best rounds of the day in the 66-strong field and earned him a well-deserved top-15 finish.

Steve Lloyd finished 25th, thanks to back-to-back rounds of 74, and the rest of the team’s scores meant that Norfolk improved their day-one score by 18 shots.

The annual event was won by a very strong team from Sussex, who now head for the national finals, but Norfolk took heart from how competitive they were on the second day.

Non-playing captain Gary Brayshaw said: “All our players did well to pick themselves up after a disappointing first round, with four players improving by four or five shots.

“Iain Reid led the way with a great round, and Steve’s form was particularly consistent. The spirit and effort from the whole team was very rewarding.”

Norfolk Seniors’ season is not over yet with further league matches to come, plus the final of the Southern Counties Foursomes which will be held at Swaffham Golf Club on September 18.

Norfolk Seniors: Jon Batten, Steve Lloyd, Adrian Myhill, Iain Reid, John Tavener, Ian Yule.
