Students take first steps on golf ‘Pathway’

Date

Norfolk County Golf Union teamed up with Pathways College and DRAGONS On The Move to provide an inspiring golf day at Royal Norwich.

Thirteen over-16s students from the college, which is attached to Parkside Provisional Complex Needs School, enthusiastically took part in the session which was hosted by NCGU’s development officer Sammy Martin and PGA professional Lloyd Jones.

The students, who have a diverse range of social, emotional and mental health issues, shrugged off the cold conditions to have a go at golf.

Lloyd gave easy-to-understand tips on the basics – and showed them how it’s done with his own impressive ball-striking.

Attendees quickly grasped the magic elements that golf can offer and a return visit is on the cards.

There was hot chocolate all round at the end, completing a brilliant experience for all involved.

Sammy said: “It was a rainswept day on the range but the students never complained and were excited to learn a new activity.

“The initiative stemmed from Norfolk County Golf Union’s desire to broaden opportunities so that everyone can have access to golf. Our offering to all is: ‘We endeavour to play together, whatever’.

“Lloyd was fantastic with everyone. His coaching blended expertise, patience and a touch of humour.

“The next step will be to invite the Pathways students back for a refresher session in early-spring. It would be great to involve some of our elite juniors at that event as I know they would gain a lot from the experience, as well as contribute to it.”

The students gave glowing feedback after their golf initiation. One aspiring golfer reflected: “I got the better the more I did,” and another commented that the session was “incredible”.

Pathways College senior teacher Joe Harkness said: “Golf, by its nature, does not present itself as the most inclusive space. NCGU showed us that you should not make assumptions based on what you expect. Lloyd and Sammy encouraged our students in a patient and fun way.”
