Young guns Toby Lewin and Jake Hurren lit up Heacham Manor Golf Club with some superb golf as they surged to success in the Norfolk County Foursomes Championship.

Lewin, 14, and Hurren, 17, took the title match in style, beating Wayne Heath and Josh Little 5 and 4, winning the Carrick and Thompson Bowls.

Victory was nothing more than the Bawburgh Golf Club teenagers deserved after playing brilliantly across the two days in north Norfolk.

They earned the right to tee up on the second morning, having secured 75 points to finish top of the pile at the end of 36 holes of Stableford play.

Lewin and Hurren took that form into their last-four clash, easing past David Fullegar and Lewis Woods.

And Lewin’s 10-foot birdie putt at the first hole ensured they carried on in the same impressive vein in the afternoon’s final.

Hurren’s putter proved just as crucial as he holed out in nerveless manner for vital halves at the second and third.

Then, the Wymondham High School sixth-former produced a precision pitch over water to help the youngsters take a 2-up lead after four holes.

The advantage was doubled by the turn, thanks to Lewin’s laser-like irons into two par-3 holes that cranked up the pressure on their opponents.

The combination play continued on the inward nine and the winning line was in touching distance at the 13th after Hurren conjured up another fine wedge, this time from the rough.

He followed up with a booming drive to split the 14th fairway and minutes later Lewin closed out the success with a cool three-foot putt.

It was a textbook foursomes triumph with teamwork to the fore, belying the fact this was the first time they had partnered one another.

Lewin said: “We weren’t expecting much. We were expecting to go out, have a good time – and I think we’ve exceeded that. We’re very happy to have got to where we have.

“If I hit a poor shot, Jake would bounce back with a good one. On the last day his putting was very good. He made some very crucial putts.”

Hurren said: “Toby did just about everything right. Both days, he did everything I needed him to. His ball-striking was pure…I wouldn’t have had anyone else on the par-3s. It was absolutely amazing.”

The four pairs that were fifth to eighth in the opening day’s Stableford play battled for the second-flight title, claimed by Swaffham golfers Roger Garrod and Danny Kew.

Day one also offered a scratch prize, which was claimed by Josh Bailey and Ross Wilson. The Thetford Golf Club pairing posted a tally of 65 points to pip Peter Murphy and Ed Dimambro and claim the NCGU Foursomes Challenge Salvers.
