Sully Goddard with the spoils of success after a fine five-shot victory in the Faldo Junior Tour tournament at John O’Gaunt Golf Club in Bedfordshire.

Norfolk teenager Sully Goddard recorded a landmark victory when surging to success in the Faldo Junior Tour tournament at John O’Gaunt Golf Club.

Goddard, 16, enjoyed one of the best moments of his fast-blossoming career as he beat a field packed with talented golfers.

The Thetford golfer posted a 54-hole total of eight-under-par to triumph by five shots at the two-course Bedfordshire venue.

Goddard reflected: “It’s definitely up there – one of the biggest things I’ve done so far.”

He put himself into contention on the opening day, thanks to a superb five-under-par round of 64.

That left him two strokes off the summit, but a one-under-par second round took him to a share of top spot.

Playing in the final group, Goddard made a flying start on day three, opening up with a pair of birdies to assume control.

He didn’t have it all his own way as a double bogey at the sixth hole threatened to derail his victory bid.

But Goddard proved his mettle with three birdies on the back nine in a two-under round of 69 that powered him to an emphatic win.

And he felt that his mindset over the three days was a key factor in his success.

Goddard said: “I didn’t really change anything in my swing much – I just, mentally, was a bit stronger. I just felt like I could birdie every hole. That’s kind of how I went into the week and was throughout the week.

“Winning always gives you confidence, so that will be really good going into the next couple of competitions to end the year on.”
