It is with great sadness to report that John Nudds passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Saturday, May 24, 2025; he was 91 years old.
John’s association with Royal West Norfolk GC started shortly after World War II when he regularly caddied and joined the Brancaster Village Golf Club as soon as he was eligible. Following National Service, John became a greenkeeper at Brancaster in his early 20s and was later appointed head greenkeeper at Hunstanton Golf Club in 1960. In 1972 he was offered the position of head greenkeeper at Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire where he stayed for 26 years before retiring. He was made an honorary member of all three clubs. He was also an honorary life member of the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Artisans golf union.
John enjoyed a very successful golf career. A few highlights include, representing Norfolk in his formative years and Berks, Bucks and Oxon during his time working in Gerrards Cross. He won the Norfolk Artisan Championship 10 times, the first in 1957 and last in 2000. In between, he was Norfolk Amateur champion in 1964 and 1969, as well as the Norfolk Open champion in 1970, a title he was most proud of as he won with a then record score of 136 after rounds of 70 and 66 at Great Yarmouth and Caister Golf Club. John was a natural leader and he was Captain of England Artisans, as well as holding the same position with Norfolk Artisans and Berks, Bucks & Oxon Artisans. He was also county captain of Berks, Bucks & Oxon.
In 2001 John was fittingly elected president of Norfolk Golf Union. He was also president and life member of the Hunstanton and District Rotary Club.
John was a caddy, greenkeeper, champion golfer, family man and a true gentleman. He will be sadly missed.
His funeral will be held at the Mintlyn Crematorium on Monday 30th June at 10am followed by a celebration of his life at Hunstanton Golf Club.
