Sometimes golf tests your patience, other times it tests your character. At this year’s 6-Man South East Qualifier, it tested both of the above and much more besides for the Norfolk side.
In temperatures that soared above 30 degrees Celsius at The Millbrook Golf Course, non-playing captain Nic Cains’ team experienced a highly- challenging 36 holes on a fast and running lay-out.
Kent responded best to the stiff examination paper, passing with flying colours to finish top of the class. For Norfolk, it’s re-sit time after finishing last of the 11 counties to tee up in Bedfordshire.
There were positives – several in fact. Ben Willis showed his class during an opening round in which level-par 72 didn’t reflect how well he played. Also, his second-round 74 ensured a top-20 finish in the 66-strong individuals’ tournament.
Callum Rana hung around, despite not having his A-game. His two late birdies – including one from just off the green at his final hole in front of a packed gallery – lifted the spirits.
Matt Strudwick and Ed DiMambro showed fighting qualities after tough opening rounds.
And then there was Nic Sperrin. Sun-stricken and nauseous, he barely touched a chip at lunchtime and then went out to birdie his opening two holes of the afternoon.
Grit – there was plenty of it. But, as everyone present in Norfolk colours was acutely aware, it’s also important that lessons are learnt to make sure next year’s renewal brings more pass-marks for the Lions.
