Lions in fighting display in Suffolk

Norfolk's under 18’s team concluded their South East League campaign at Haverhill Golf Club

Norfolk Under 18 boys gave a gutsy performance on the final match day of their South East League triangular series against Bedfordshire and Suffolk.

A relatively inexperienced side lined up at Haverhill Golf Club as a result of key absentees contesting the Norfolk Amateur Championship.

But the young Lions seized their opportunity and emerged honours even with hosts Suffolk, while losing out narrowly to Bedfordshire.

Toby Lewin took the latest in a list of steps forward in 2025 by beating both of his opponents. Luis King matched his team-mate’s achievement and put two points on the board for Norfolk.

Other excellent efforts came from emerging prospect Jack Bennett – victorious in his Suffolk match-up – and Luke Gilding, who recorded an excellent success against the same county.

Cool-hand Jake Gunby confirmed his reputation as a reliable points-gatherer with a polished win against Bedfordshire.

The overall results meant Bedfordshire finished top of the league, just ahead of Norfolk.

Norfolk County Golf Union development officer Sammy Martin said: “It was an important day in our progression as, overall, the boys proved themselves and, in most cases, did everything they were advised in the team talk.

“So far this season they have grown enormously as golfers and competitors – their grit and focused determination was palpable at Haverhill. The Norfolk Lion roared louder than ever!”

Match scores (Haverhill Golf Club): Norfolk 4 Suffolk 4; Norfolk 3 Bedfordshire 5; Suffolk 2.5 Bedfordshire 5.5.

Norfolk Under 18s: Jack Bennett, Luke Gilding, Jake Gunby, Luis King, Toby Lewin, Tom Mathers, Will Payne, Louie Raine.
