Norfolk Seniors were on the wrong end of a Cambridgeshire comeback on a day of fluctuating fortunes at Girton Golf Club.
The visitors played some excellent golf in the morning foursomes matches to take an imposing 4-1 lead in the East Anglian Senior League clash.
Three combinations won and the other two claimed halves to send Norfolk into the singles in confident mood.
The early stages of the afternoon looked to be following the same pattern with Norfolk asserting in several head-to-heads.
Sheringham golfer Mark Williamson never trailed in running out a confident 5 and 3 winner – and King’s Lynn’s Iain Yule always had matters in hand at the tail end.
But elsewhere Cambridgeshire began to turn the tide in their favour to set up a thrilling finale.
Eaton captain Iain Reid was pegged back to all-square on the 16th green and later had to settle for a half-point.
That left the overall match depending on the outcome of the final game, which saw Sheringham’s Jon Batten nursing a 1-up lead down the stretch.
After a solid approach into the heart of the last green, it appeared as if Batten might just prevail to give Norfolk a share of the spoils on the day.
But his opponent conjured a 130-yard shot from the rough to 15 feet from where his birdie putt just caught the inside of the cup, dropping for birdie to give Cambridgeshire an outright 8-7 triumph.
Norfolk’s non-playing captain Gary Brayshaw said: “We’re always disappointed if we lose, but this one was especially frustrating as we played so well in the foursomes to open up a commanding lead.
“Momentum started to go Cambridgeshire’s way in the afternoon singles and, to be fair, they played well, holing plenty of putts.
“It was a hard-fought finish and fine margins meant we ended up on the wrong side of the result.”
Brayshaw’s side return to Cambridgeshire on July 1 for the South East Seniors Foursomes Qualifier at Gog Magog Golf Club.
Before that, they travel to Collingtree Park to face Northamptonshire on June 23 in another East Anglian Senior League fixture.
