The under 14s took on Suffolk at Gorleston GC

Congratulations to Norfolk’s under 14s team won the inaugural Suffolk versus Norfolk Friendly Cup this week at Gorleston Golf Club.

The match, consisting of four foursomes and eight singles, was played in great spirit with Norfolk coming out on top by 9.5 to 2.5.

Norfolk opened the foursomes with convincing wins from the opening two pairs, Leighton Young & Tom Burton and Jack Johnson & Anthony Coppola.

Elliot Smith & Oscar Sidey were 1 down on the 9th tee, before Elliot played a superb approach shot to win the final hole and earn a momentum building half point.

The singles saw a dominant performance from the Norfolk squad. Unfazed by the deteriorating weather the team set off in their singles matches with a determined focus.

As the rain became increasingly heavy the decision was agreed by both Team Managers to reduce the afternoon singles to a 9 hole contest.

The Norfolk boys battled on in the terrible weather showing extraordinary team spirit and resolve, which is becoming the hallmark of the U14s squad.

Match wins were earned by almost all of the squad, many of which were by a good margin. A notable victory came from Leighton Young who birdied the final hole to win 1 up.

Following play the teams gathered in the clubhouse and exchanged stories about their matches over games of pool and darts, further strengthening their team bond.

Gorleston made an excellent venue which was enjoyed by all.

Our thanks go to the Suffolk Golf Union for organising a brilliant match, and congratulations to both teams for their etiquette on the day.
