Norfolk heads held high after Eaton loss

Norfolk's Brandon Hobley impressed against Leicestershire & Rutland, winning both of his matches at Eaton Golf Club on Sunday.

Brandon Hobley and Sully Goddard starred as Norfolk finished their season with an honourable 4-8 defeat against Anglian League champions Leicestershire & Rutland.

Hobley followed up his recent Order of Merit race success by winning both of his matches at Eaton Golf Club.

The Bawburgh golfer, partnered by Callum Rana, closed out his foursomes clash with a stunning shot into the 18th green.

The pair, who held a slender 1-up lead as they went down Eaton’s challenging final hole, saw their opponents find the heart of the putting surface with a solid approach.

But Hobley had the move covered, unleashing a stunning 4-iron from 216 yards that ended up 10 foot from the pin.

When their opponents narrowly missed for birdie from mid-range, the Norfolk pair closed out a battling victory.

Hobley continued to show guts and game as he fought back from 2-down to win his singles tie 2 and 1.

Also in the head-to-heads, Norfolk teenager Goddard played some brilliant golf in the first match out against L&R’s Will Plant.

It was a great advert for county golf as both players performed to an extremely high standard in a to-and-fro contest.

Goddard, 16, asserted with some excellent play early in the back nine, giving him a 2-up cushion.

But Plant, who has enjoyed a fine season, halved the deficit with three holes left and it took real heart and skill for Goddard to claim a memorable 1-up victory.

Rana’s good form was evident again in the singles as he finished all square after an equally see-saw match with James Billingham.

Matt Strudwick and Sean Rafferty also contributed a half-point in the morning foursomes as Norfolk emerged with plenty of positives from a hard-fought day’s golf in which Leicestershire and Rutland’s prowess with the putter proved telling.

L&R’s 2nd team came out on top against their Norfolk counterparts at Hinckley Golf Club.

Debutant Luis King impressed alongside Jake Gunby as they put a point on the board in the foursomes. Fellow teenager Liam Caffyn also did well, partnering Scott Sealey in a halved match.

But the singles went very much in favour of the hosts with Pete Murphy’s half-point the sole contribution as the overall match score ended in a 2-10 loss.
