Locke combination secure County Foursomes crown

Date

Simon and Hayden Locke proved the perfect double act as they stormed to victory at Sprowston Manor in the two-day Norfolk County Foursomes Championship.

The father and son duo dominated the tournament final, beating Scott Sealey and Liam Caffyn 5 and 3.

The Locke combination also finished top of the leaderboard after the opening day’s 36-hole Stableford competition.

They claimed 75 points to head up the eight pairs who qualified for the second day’s match play action, which took place across two tiers.

Simon and Hayden won through 4&3 in their semi-final against Phil Brown and Warren Blackwell.

In the other last-four clash, Sealey and Caffyn edged a 1-up win over James Hazel and Seb Sadler.

The Lockes remained in flying form in the title match, taking control at the par-5 second hole.  Simon sent a superb 227-yard 3-wood into the heart of the green to set up a birdie to open up a lead the Lockes would never relinquish.

Simon’s brisk style and stunning drives were matched by teenager Hayden’s excellent approach irons. Both of them showed exemplary composure alongside shrewd decision-making.

The Eaton Golf Club pair, in receipt of seven strokes, moved 3-up by the sixth hole and kept their foot down across the back nine.

At the 475-yard par-4 11th hole, Simon hit a booming tee-shot and also a deft pitch. Hayden, 16, stepped forward to convert the par putt from 10 feet to leave the Lockes 4-up and in the clear.

Norfolk county team pairing Sealey and Caffyn tried hard to make a fight of it, but could not match the consistency of their opponents.

And the final came to its conclusion on the 15th green, prompting emotional victory scenes for the Lockes.

Simon, 42, pointed to the enjoyment of simply playing alongside one another as a key factor to his and Hayden’s success.

He said: “It’s really the friendship we have as father and son. There’s no stress, just let him get on with it – he was solid. It’s a dream come true.

“I put my clubs away for 14 years and started again about three years ago. I wouldn’t even expect to be playing in something like this, let alone winning it.”

Locke has clearly passed on his golf passion and talent to Hayden, who shone in a series of key moments.

Hayden said: “I really enjoyed playing with dad. We worked together, helped each other when needed. Perfect teamwork.”

The four pairs that filled fifth to eighth spot in the Stableford play vied for the second-tier title, claimed by another father-and-son team, Karl and Harry Diggens.

The Diggens triumphed 2 and 1 after a hard-fought encounter with fellow Sprowston Manor golfers Dan Palmer and Tim Hales.

Day one also offered a scratch prize, which was claimed by Sealey and Caffyn who posted a fine tally of 70 points.
