Bawburgh golfer Charlie Green produced a brilliant performance to secure his second success in the County Handicap Championship.

Barnham Broom Golf Club’s ‘Valley’ lay-out and soaring heat combined to present a stiff test for the 47-strong field.

But Green had all angles covered and net scores of 71 and 70 resulted in an emphatic seven-shot victory for the eight-handicapper.

He was on the front foot from the early stages, impressing with his all-round game – particularly around the greens.

Green held the halfway lead at lunchtime and backed it up with more fine play in the afternoon to ensure a second triumph in the tournament he won five years earlier at Eaton.

Green, 21, said: “I managed to birdie the first three holes, just missing an eagle putt on the first – I chipped in on the third. Although the back nine in the morning was not as good as I had hoped, the afternoon was much more solid and I chipped in again for a bogey on the last hole.”

Mundesley’s David Clarke took the runner-up spot on a 148 total, one clear of Stuart Olley (King’s Lynn), who pipped Olaf Gent (Thetford) on count-back.

Mundesley trio of Clarke, Max Cutting and James Lester posted an overall tally of 456 to claim top spot in the team event.

Norfolk County Golf Union president Stuart Goodman – on hand to present the prizes – thanked Barnham Broom for hosting the event and congratulated all the players on competing so admirably in the extreme conditions.
