Sully Goddard hit a wonder shot on the final hole at Eaton Golf Club to set up victory in a thrilling renewal of the Norfolk Boys Championship.

With one hole remaining, Goddard was tied at the top with playing partner Theo Pudney.

Pudney, who won the same event 12 months earlier, had the momentum stood on the 18th tee after birdies on the two previous holes pulled him back to two-over-par.

And when the Sheringham Golf Club champion found the short grass with his closing tee-shot he looked to hold the upper hand.

Goddard, 16, failed to find the fairway and ended up obstructed by a tree on the long dog-leg par-4.

But the Thetford Golf Club member showed great skill and bags of heart to cut a stunning 3-wood that sailed to the heart of the green.

Pudney’s lengthy approach missed the putting surface and he was unable to get up and down.

That left Goddard to close out his round with a two-putt par before signing for a round of 72.

In the group behind Tom Mathers and Quin Monahan were in close pursuit but both dropped a stroke at the tough last hole to end up alongside Pudney in a share of second spot.

“I’m definitely happy – a win always gives you confidence,” said Goddard, before reflecting on his 18th–hole masterstroke.

“I’ve just hit a big, big slice around the tree to about 10 feet from 240 (yards). It was one of the best shots I’ve ever hit to be honest.”

As well as getting his hands on the silverware, Goddard’s victory earned him a place in the England Golf Junior Champion of Champions tournament staged on September 13-14 at Woodhall Spa.

On a day where more than 30 of Norfolk’s talented young golfers teed up, there were also age category successes for:

Quin Monaghan (Eaton GC) – U18s Scratch

Luis King (Eaton GC) – U18s Handicap

Louie Raine (Royal Norwich GC) – U16s Scratch

Jack Bennett (Royal Norwich GC) – U16s Handicap

Anthony Coppola (Royal Norwich GC) – U14s Scratch

James Mead (Royal Norwich GC) – U14s Handicap
