Norfolk powered through to the final of the Southern Counties Senior Foursomes with a superb success in the Eastern Section quadrangular at Gog Magog Golf Club in Cambridgeshire.
Non-playing captain Gary Brayshaw’s side showed steel and skill in equal measures as they overcame Suffolk, Bedfordshire and the host county.
It was Norfolk’s first victory in the event since 2021 and earned them a spot in September 18’s final, which this year is being held on home soil at Swaffham Golf Club.
Brayshaw said: “I couldn’t be more pleased for the team – it’s fantastic for us to get our hands on a trophy.
“Our foursomes play has been strong in the league so far this season and we brought that form and more to Gog Magog Golf Club.
“With the final of the Southern Counties Senior Foursomes being staged at Swaffham, it is fitting that the host county will be represented.
“And if we turn up in similar form, we’ll be a match for the other sectional winners.”
Norfolk’s final points tally was seven – one and a half clear of runners-up Suffolk, who led at the halfway stage.
Simon Tilbrook and Steve Lloyd got the ball rolling with the first win of the day, seeing off Cambridgeshire opposition 3 and 1.
Next, Mark Williamson and Jon Batten secured a vital victory on the final hole, overcoming a Bedfordshire pairing.
Just as telling was the point claimed by fellow Sheringham duo Paul Sennett and Neal Milton in Norfolk’s final morning match.
Sennett sunk a key putt from 12 feet to ensure the 16th hole was won and then arrowed a stunning iron into the 17th green to set up a 2 and 1 triumph over a Suffolk combination.
That left Norfolk half a point off the summit going into the afternoon games, which produced some thrilling golf.
Trusty duo Tillbrook and Lloyd conjured up an eagle on their way to a comfortable 5 and 3 win against Bedfordshire
King’s Lynn partnership Iain Yule and Mark Butt were all-square at the halfway point against Suffolk opponents, but turned on the afterburners to close out a 4 and 3 victory.
Williamson and Batten were involved in a much closer game against another Suffolk pairing In the end, Williamson’s putter proved the difference as he showed a sure stroke on 17 and 18 to deliver a 2-up win.
Norfolk’s seventh win from their 10 matches on the day was provided by Milton and Sennett, who lost the first two holes but soon clicked through the gears to end up victorious by the margin of 4 and 3.
